Museums

Unlike the rest of Costa Blanca, Alicante has distanced itself in the top end, being the classiest city on the coastline.

The oldest building in Alicante is incidentally a museum. Facing the Iglesia Santa María is the Museu de Arte del Siglo XX Asegurada, Alicante’s oldest building which was a former granary constructed in 1685. Ironically, the city’s oldest building houses an extensive collection of the most notable masterpieces in modern art collection. Among the noteworthy paintings on display are those of Dali, Picasso, Cocteau, Vasarély, Tàpies, Calder and Miro. The museum contains awesomely beautiful works of modern art from 114 artists, including the aforementioned, plus Gris, Chillada, and more. 177 of these works are segregated into geometric, abstract and figurative realms and are shown on a rotation basis. Other significant artists include Braque, Chagall, Giacometti, Kandinsky, and Zadkine. Apart from such artists, Manuel de Falla has his musical score exhibited here. The museum came into being in 1977 upon the donation of a private collection by the painter and sculptor Eusebio Sempere, whose works are also on display. It is open from June to September, Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm and 4 pm to 8 pm, Sunday from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. From October to May, the schedule is Tuesday to Saturday 10 am to 2 pm and 5 pm to 9 pm, Sunday 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. Admission is free.

An experience never to be forgotten, ambling through the Museo Arqueológico Provincial de Alicante (MARQ) will leave the visitor entranced. Only two years old, the museum takes a very high tech and very innovative approach to the usual boring premise of long queues through pots and coins. Conversely, the museum simulates a magical combination of lights, shadows, sounds and interactive images accompanying collections of Islamic treasures, Iberian ceramic arts and Roman artifacts. Eight galleries use multimedia techniques to create a seamless rendition of the past. Located behind the Castillo de Santa Barbara, the Museo Arqueológico Provincial, or MARQ, was nominated as the European Museum of the Year in 2004 for its strong collection of ceramics and Iberian art. It has been highly commended the world over for its innovative, visual experience. However, the major drawback is the lack of information in English. English-speaking guides, though, can be booked in advance. The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday 10 am - 7 pm, Sunday 10 pm - 2 pm, admission £4, children 7-15, £2. Bus 2 from Glorieta de la Estrella.

On the other hand, the Museo de Bellas Artes Gravina is an inspiring museum hosing beautiful works of fine arts. The museum is housed within an opulent mansion dating back to the 18th century. Another commendable museum is the new Museu de Fogueres (also known as the Museo de las Hogueras), which has spectacles of audiovisual presentations on the Fiesta de Sant Joan, with its fireworks and satirical effigies (Valenciano fogueres, Spanish hogueras) blazing during the said affair.
