Unlimited shopping options await the shopper in Alicante, even in its most secluded street corner.
Situated east of the port, the newest, biggest shopping center to come to town is Panoramis. Those up for shopping at department stores might do well with the El Corte Ingles department store located in Avenida Maison Nave. This is the largest department store there is, often offering the latest general merchandise. There are smaller shops dotting San Francisco in the new town, and around Calle Mayor in the old town.
Usually the best finds are those concerning handmade artifacts. Such items include ceramics, hand tooled leather, wood carvings, ornamental boxes, candle holders, and small scale mosaics. The most authentic product which is truly Alicante’s own is the so called botijos - earthenware jugs for drinking purposes. Sold too are ceramics, leather goods and small mosaics.
Fran Holuba, located on Calle Jaime Segarra, 16 (Tel No. 96 524 45 95), carries many varieties of each of such works from creative artisans. This shop is considered as one of the best all-purpose shops. The studio of Pedro Soriano offers modern sculpture crafted from wood and such stones as marble, and is located in Plaza San Antonio, 2 (Tel No. 96 520 78 54). The products aren’t necessarily religious, mind you.
