Heaps of alternatives other than roaming within Benidorm proper is waiting for those wanting an escapade. There is the charmingly rugged countryside surrounding the resort, where riding on and jeep safaris and cycle trips are a suggested outlet. Off to the ancient mountain castle at Guadalest, erected by the Moors in 715, the most discriminating tourist would breathe in an authentic feel of nostalgia. Not far away, the town of Altea delights visitors with its delightful medieval cobbled streets and beautiful Mediterranean views, eight miles (13 km) north of Benidorm.

Some miles off the harbor, in the middle of the inlet, the island of Benidorm awaits. Spectacularly enough, this is a trip on a regular catamaran with an underwater deck where you can see marine life once you've arrived. The island serves as a bird sanctuary. It is legend that the island is actually a piece of rock from nearby Mount Campana. The legendary figure, Roland, is said to have no less cut this off with his sword during the expeditions of Charlemagne. Also, this is a scuba-diving haven. Trips take off every hour.

In Algar Falls, beautiful rapids and springs cascade into splendid natural pools where visitors could soak in amidst a lush, tropical atmosphere. The area is conducive to exotic vegetation, natural spices and medicinal herbs. Conveniently alongside are barbecue stands, bars, toilets and showers. There’s also the Museum of the Environment, nearby.

The Lemon Express is a locomotive extravaganza hauling the daring to a 30 mile rail journey from Benidorm through Altea, Calpe, Benissa and Teulada to Gata de Gorgos. The scenic route through the hilly countryside and the accompanying guides are one for anyone. Upon reaching Gata, one can check out a guitar factory or the popular local basket weaving techniques. Trips run every day from Tuesdays to Saturdays. Departs 9:35 am. Reservations can be made via: Travel Agencies, Benidorm Railway Station. Also, you may well find that you can book a ride from your hotel.

Near Busot, 24 km north of Alicante, is the Canelobre Caves, a mammoth natural underground complex. Intricate mineral formations resemble candelabras. What’s more, the chambers are lit to amplify the natural structures. The caves are even used to stage concerts. Close to the entry way, delightful pathways for walking tours are sure to thrill anyone.

Adrenaline shall rush; this is the Marco Polo Expeditions’ promise. They offer programs of sailing, moonlight safaris, diving, climbing, jeep safaris, catamaran and biking experiences - perfect for those yearning for that heady, invigorating feeling.

Riding quad bikes on Benidorm’s rugged, barren terrain are exhilarating, long trips. This is superb off road challenge in over 70 kilometers of heart stopping backdrop. Amateurs are handled well by professional guides. Take note that visitors need a full driving license.
