Torrevieja partly garners recognition from its sumptuous local gastronomy, which traditionally and primarily features seafood. Torrevieja’s stellar dish is the "caldero." This is actually stewed fish, consisting of choice cuts of fish with names like: "the hen" (la gallina), "the cock" (el gallo), "soft roe" (lecha), "spider" (araña), and “red mullet" (salmonetes) among others. The extract of the fish is set aside and cooked in garlic, "ñora" and tomato. In turn, the concoction is used as a base for the rice. The rice then accompanies the delicious stew.

Eating out in Torrevieja and nearby areas is generally cheap and broad-based. Plus, there's always a good selection of restaurants around that offer excellent local cooking.

The food in Spain is particularly healthy, with plenty of fresh fish and seafood, and a combination of fresh vegetable and fruit produce from local markets.

A typical dish of Torrevieja is the caldero, which is made of the freshest ingredients -- fish, in its different variations, and rice with the broth from the fish. Other typical seafood dishes are cod stew, sea bream, roe, mackerel, ray, tunny, mojama, and shark.
In Torrevieja and surrounding areas, virtually every kind of restaurant is found. Variety is certainly not in shortage, and the satisfaction of your taste buds is also assured! Along with the typical Spanish cuisine and local fresh fish and seafood restaurants of the region, you will also find a wealth of international restaurants - French, Italian, Mexican, English, Thai, Chinese, German, Indian, to name but a few! The gastronomy of this region makes sure that all tastes are catered.
There's hardly anywhere in the world that hasn't got either a McDonald s or Burger King. If you re the type who isn t very adventurous on food, or can t live without some sort of fast food, here's how to find them: Coming from Torrevieja town on the Crevillente road going in the direction of Quesada and Benijofar , you'll easily see them on your right. If you've reached La Siesta without seeing them, you've gone too far! If on the other hand you are coming from the direction of Quesada and Benijofar, on the Crevillente road going in the direction of Torrevieja , you'll see them on the left side between La Siesta and Torrevieja . Try the large deluxe chips at McDonald s, best with their patata deluxe salsa

Note that lunch time in Spain is not before 2pm and dinner is usually as late as about 10pm. However, restaurants in tourist resorts have been accommodating enough to adjust their time table for people wishing to eat earlier.

Restaurant Grading - Restaurants are graded into four classes but rather than according to the quality of the food and service, the grading is often done based on the décor, the number of dishes offered and prices of the tourist menu available.

Snacks - For lighter meals, many bars and cervecerias in and around Torrevieja serve a selection of tapas, small dishes of tasty snacks eaten with a drink. Tapas are served in three sizes, small, medium and large: pinchos, tapas and raciones.

Vegetarian - Most Spanish restaurants in Torrevieja and nearby areas usually cater for or accommodate the vegetarian s diet. Typically you will find salad, tortillas, or vegetable tapas.

Giving Tips - Prices may not always include tax. If the service and food are good enough, you can give the tip in loose change, maximum of 5%. If the service and/or food is unsatisfactory, you don t have to worry about anything.
Wines - The wines of the region from the east coast of Spain have the following labels of quality: Alicante, Valencia, Jumilla, Utiel-Requena and Yecla , covering quite different types of wines. Those from Alicante are reds and rosés with a high alcohol content with between 12% and 16%. Those from Valencia are usually dry, white, and very fresh. The Jumilla wines from the area of Murcia are easy to distinguish because they are aged in oak barrels. The wine is typically dark red and thick, with a very high alcohol content. Yacla has reds and rosés with a very mild, pleasant taste and of between 13% and 15% alcohol content.
