Popular traditions

Torrevejenses, the locals of Torrevieja, never see their age old traditions die. Albeit the infiltrating expansion in population, Torrevieja’s legacy of traditions -- from the popular singing of Habaneras in family celebrations to the visiting of the La Mata pinewoods at Easter time -- is stridently alive.

Torrevieja is by heart a seafaring town. Its seafaring flare is retained with numerous traditions especially the singing of "habaneras." Towards the end of the marina’s promenade, ships from the wharfs, loaded with salt, would depart for Cuba. On their return, the same vessels would bring back, the popular compositions locally known as habaneras. The songs would then become part of the set in the popular Coral Competition held annually during the summer.

The International Habaneras and Polyphonic Competition takes place towards the last week of July in the area of the Eras de la Sal, the cathedral of the Habaneras. The festival has been inextricably associated with the city.

A horde of choirs representing the five continents have performed at this unique historical venue, singing their tribute in Spanish to the Habaneras song. From the Eras de la Sal area the early Torrevejenses depart for Cuba with their load of lustrous white salt. On their return, the rhythm and sound of the habaneras are unmistakable with their presence.

The town leaps to festivities each month of the year. Here are the most important:

? January: New Year’s Day and Procession of the Three Kings.

? February: Carnival festivals and processions.

? March: Hotel and Business Gastronomical Festival and Presentation of May Fair.

? June: San Juan bonfires.

? July: Seafarer's festivals of the Virgin of Carmen and the International Festival of Habaneras and Polyphonic singing.

? August: Festivals of San Emigdio and de Barrios in honor of tourists.

? September: Festival of Vendimia in La Mata.

? October: El Pilar festival.

? November: All Saints and Halloween. Festival of Saint Cecilia, patron saint of music.

? December: Festival of the patron saint of Torrevieja and Christmas.
