Cradled right along the coast of the sun kissed Costa Blanca is the Spanish city of Torrevieja. Situated in the south of the Land of Valencia, Spain, the seaside city lies within the district of Vega Baja. The surface area for Torrevieja is 30 square kilometers, and the city also has propriety over 20 kilometers of Costa Blanca’s resplendent coastline. Torrevieja is demarcated by the town boundaries which are adjacent to Guardamar del Segura to the north, Rojales and Benijófar to the west, Montesinos and San Miguel de Salinas to the southwest and the Orihuela beaches to the south.
Relative to Alicante, Torrevieja lies approximately 41 kilometers south. Furthermore, Torrevieja is 23 kilometers from Elche to the northwest, and 53 kilometers from Murcia in the southeast. The 20 kilometers of coastline defining the city, is segregated into six large beaches - La Mata, Cabo Cervera, Los Locos, El Cura, Los Náufragos and Ferris. Also, about 20 coves could be found in the city, along with numerous cliffs.
The city has roughly a population of 81,080 inhabitants. At any rate, Torrevieja’s Spanish population number to around 43,661 inhabitants. Expatriates consistently swoop to Torrevieja for many a reason. The foreign population in Torrevieja amount to 37,419 inhabitants. There are about 144 nationalities in the city, including mostly denominations of Germans, British and Scandinavians. Contingents of some European nationalities number as follows: English - 8,500, Germans - 4,500, Scandinavians - 4,200, Netherlands - 2,500, French - 1,800 and around a thousand each of Italians, Portuguese, Austrians and Irish. Many of these contingents stay in Torrevieja all the year long. Even non-Europeans have taken a liking for the city, where 12,000 of them, predominantly citizens of former Eastern Europe and Latin America inhabit the city. In the same way, tourists from all over Spain patronize Torrevieja. Come August, the city population multiplies by the exponent, like many of the places along the Costa Blanca. By summer, the population escalates to about 650,000 people.
Over 100,000 accommodations are marketed as second residences in Torrevieja, where the influx of visitors amounts to more than two million a year. With an annual average hotel occupation of 75%, Torrevieja is well equipped with a total of 2,713 hotel beds.
The city is located right smack in between the Mediterranean and the city’s two expansive salt lakes which are collectively known as La Mata y Torrevieja. The huge salt lakes, linked with each other, were pronounced and protected as a Natural Park. Both are surrounded by luxurious housing projects.
In effect, the sea and the leviathan lakes conspire to bring about a healthy micro climate truly Torrevieja’s own.
