Town history |
 |
On March 3, 1803, King Charles IV decreed the administration of the Royal Salt Works from La Mata be transferred to the present site of so called Torre-viexa. Hence, the town of Torrevieja was administratively founded. The transfer of the administration of the Royal Salt Works to Torrevieja is regarded by historians as the beginning of the history of this town. Torrevieja was so named because of the plenty of maritime watch towers that lined the coast of Torrevieja along the Mediterranean coast. At present, a replica in the form of the Torre del Moro panoramic viewpoint is intact.
One of the greatest tribulations in the history of the town is the catastrophic earthquake which shook Torrevieja in 1829. The place was so badly obliterated that a complete reconstruction of the town under the direction of the military architect Larramendi was deemed crucial.
During the last quarter of the 20th century, Torrevieja’s population consequently projected a significant demographic development. Henceforth, the present town is a virtual melting pot, cosmopolitan and multi-cultural.
Salt mining which is prevalent in this region, dates back to as remote as the early epoch of Christianity. The said occupation reached its zenith during the 19th century.
